Hiking in and around Innsbruck

There are many reasons why Innsbruck is called capital oft he Alps: the city is surrounded by a wonderful mountain scenery. Experience the nature of Tyrol, the fascination of the alpine landscape with its diversity of plants, the impressing woods and lush meadows. Experience the feeling of standing at the top of a mountain and enjoying an incredible view.

And in one of the many traditional mountain huts you can taste real Tyrolean dishes as the famous sweet "Kaiserschmarrn", "Kasspatzln" (tiny flour dumplings with cheese) or "Graukas" (cheese specialty).

5 tips for discovering our mountains

#1 Nordkettenbahnen

A trip on the cable car, directly from the city center, up to the Nordkette mountain is - especially in good weather - definitely a must. The panoramic views are unbeatable and both are possible: chilling and relaxing but also extensive hiking. At the station Seegrube starts an easy panoramic circular walk (about 1-hour walk).

Guests who stay at least 3 nights in Innsbruck will be rewarded with the Welcome Card Plus and have the opportunity (in the summer) to use 4 of the cable cars around Innsbruck free of charge (one up / down trip on each). A trip to the Rangger Köpfl mountain takes 3 hours or more, for Kühtai you should plan the whole day – beautiful alpine scenery, breathtaking views and fresh mountain air included. The extra plus: the public bus lines to the starting point of the cable cars are free too!

# 3 Guided hike on Friday to Arzler Alm

The rustic Arzler Alm is a popular place for us locals if we want to make a short, nice hike. Beside the beautiful views you also get very good food there! The hike starts every Friday at 9 am at the Golden Roof in Old Town and leads over the Hungerburg to the Arzler Alm. The last part of the return journey - from Hungerburg to the city center – will be covered by the Hungerburg cable car. Price per person: € 10.00. This hike is suitable for everybody, also inexperienced, and ends around 1 pm.

# 4 Innsbruck mountain hiking program

You want “a bit more”, but still organized and guided? Then the mountain hiking program is a good choice for you. According to the schedule, different tours with a walking time of approx. 3 - 4 hours are offered from Monday to Friday. Bus transfer to the starting point and back, mountain guide and - if needed - hiking equipment to rent are free. The tours start at 9 am at Congress Innsbruck.

# 5 Patscherkofel - Evening trip on Thursday

The Patscherkofel is called Innsbruck's "local Mountain" and is located about 15 minutes by bus away from the city center. Every Thursday the cable car runs in the evening too (6 to 11 pm) and offers the special opportunity to experience a sunset in the mountains. Absolutely a Must-See!
